Zambia

May 30th, 2009

The final country of this trip. Zambia has many attractions but doesn’t receive the same level of attention as Kenya and Tanzania. It is supposed to be a hidden treasure. We will let you know.

Depending on our arrival time in Zambia we will adjust our schedule accordingly. We hope to see as much of the country as possible, but must end up at our final destination, Fawlty Towers in Livingstone in time to rendezvous with Diane and Christopher, who are due to arrive in Zambia around mid Decemeber.

The town of Livingstone is close to the the mighty Victora Falls and the Zambezi River. After our long cycle through Africa our plan is to spend the three weeks over Christmas and New Year exploring the area and taking part in many of the activities that are available around Livingstone.

In the far west of Zambia, close to the town of Kasane a quirk of geography means that four african countries borders all meet at a single point on the map. Namibia has a long extended frontier that juts out into the heart of Africa and just makes contact with Zimbabwe’s own westward extention. To the north is Zambia and to the south is Botswana. Zambia and Botwana are nearly separated at this point,  in what is probably the shortest frontier in the world at only 750 metres long. If time and conditions allow it would be an interesting trip to make a quick circuit of all four countries, crossing each border as close to the common meeting point as possible.
