In September 2001 Dennis set off on what is probably his biggest challenge to date. The plan was to cycle solo and unsupported from Harwich to Timbuktu in Mali. This would be a journey of over 4,000 miles by bike and would involve crossing the Sahara Desert and travelling through the seldom visited countries of Western Sahara and Mauritania.
