Trinidad & Tobago

May 24th, 2009

Essentially a family holiday to the Caribbean, but we still managed to include a number of notable ‘mini-adventures’.

Who needs luggage? I've got my bike!
I’m sure I put the wheels in here somewhere

Tobago is surprisingly mountainous. A cycle tour of the island took an entire day and involved several climbs up into the rain-forest on the north of the island.

A great place for a winter triathlon training camp. I was normally out cycling by 05:30 each morning to avoid the heat of the day and the crazy local drivers!!

Giant turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs
You look just like my husband does after a long swim

Watching the turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on a remote beach in Trinidad was a wonderful experience in the middle of the night.

Whilst laying their eggs the leatherback turtles are in a trance and seem unaware of the strange humans who come to watch this amazing scene.

Trekking through the rainforest on Trinadad
Making slow progress through the dense tropical jungle

All the family were roped into an ascent of Trinidad’s highest mountain in the heavily forested north of the island. A trek through the jungle was an experience to behold.

The highest point is Mt. Aripo (3,085ft / 940m). To reach the summit there is a trek through the tropical rainforest in the north of the island. Luckily it was the dry season when we went, although the going was tough in places.
